Meet the Farmer

Kelp Farmer

John Lovett, Ocean Farmer

John Lovett is a data and analytics consultant who began ocean farming for three reasons: 1) Spend more time on the water, 2) Do something good for the environment, 3) Use data to get smarter. What started as a side hustle, has turned into a passion for being out on the waters of Massachusetts year round, while using technology and data to farm kelp in a way that protects the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale.

The DSK Farm is a family business and John’s wife Kara and three boys are all active helpers on the farm. In addition to his family help, the DSK Farm employs Mass Maritime Academy students through a Co-Op program and works with Brown University students for Environmental Impact studies.

The DSK Farm partnership with WHOI enables research to take place on the farm to refine and develop subtidal aquaculture gear that is whale and turtle friendly.
